the graciousness of uncertainty

sometimes (in my case -- a lot!) God works in mysterious ways. after opening the page to today's devotional reading from oswald chambers, a light, yet small, shined bright and spoke right to my heart.

"it doth not yet appear what we shall be." 1 john 3:2

Naturally, we are inclined to be so mathematical and calculating that we look upon uncertainty as a bad thing. We imagine that we have to reach some end, but that is not the nature of spiritual life. The nature of spiritual life is that we are certain in our uncertainty, consequently we do not make our nests anywhere. Common sense says -- "well, supposing I were in that condition..." we cannot suppose ourselves in any condition we have never been in.

Certainty is the mark of the common-sense life: gracious uncertainty is the mark of the spiritual life. To be certain of God means that we are uncertain in all our ways, we do not know what a day may bring forth. This is generally said with a sigh of sadness; it should be rather an expression of breathless expectation. We are uncertain of the next step, but we are certain of God. Immediately we abandon to God, and do the duty that lies nearest, He packs our life with surprises all the time. When we become advocates of a creed, something dies; we do not believe God, we only believe our belief about him. Jesus said, "except ye...become as little children." Spiritual life is the life of a child. We are not uncertain of God, but uncertain of what he is going to do next. If we are only certain in our beliefs, we get dignified and severe and have the ban of finality about our views; but when we are rightly related to God, life is full of spontaneous, joyful uncertainty and expectancy.

"believe also in me," said Jesus, not - "believe certain things about me." Leave the whole thing to him, it is gloriously uncertain how He will come in, but he will come. remain loyal to him.

27

the number of herbal supplements I'm taking daily to get my pituitary and adrenal glands in good working order. And so far I'm right on track, receiving a gold star from dr. jim yesterday. If next week goes as well, I'm moving on to the maintenance phase, going every other week instead of weekly.

oh and I'm down 16 big ones as of this morning and rekindling my love with our bathroom scale.

*ok, so I just noticed my claritin-d is in this picture, which technically isn't a herbal supplement, but still, a pill, I must swallow, daily.

 8

Eight things I will tell you today, on your eighth birthday:

1. I love you with all my heart and soul;

2. I will savor for as long as possible your requests to snuggle;

3. I hope the compassion and love you have for others remain steadfast;

4. no matter what the kids at school say, you look like a rock star with your glasses;

5. I enjoy taking you to school every morning; it warms my heart that you still kiss me, in front of others, before saying goodbye;

6. I’m very proud of all your Eagle Grams;

7. my heart smiles every time you call Adam, dad;

8. happy birthday my sweet, sweet Brenner.

always and forever...

the theme was green

yesterday we had brenner's birthday party at lava lanes in bend. i'm totally exhausted from the weekend, so I'll let the pictures (yet again) do the talking.

*I would just like to note for the record that even though I spent over three hours making these green little creatures, with an exception of a few frosting licks, I didn't eat a single one. I'm totally aware that I'm patting myself on the back, thank you.

**also, Brenner and Adam rock the guitar and drums on Rock Band. I, however suck on mic. seriously, suck!
